A Study on Health Status of High School Girls in Seoul

Abstract
A survey was carried out on 403 students (day students 270, evening students 133) during the period from May to the last part of June, 1971 in order to determine the current health status of high school girls in Seoul. As a results of analysis of the questionaires completed, the following conclusions were reached;
1. Of the total respondents 61.6% of day students and 51.9% of evening students were eighteen years of age and 35.6% of day students and 20.3% of evening students were seventeen years of age.

2. Of the 270 day students, 92.9% graduated from day middle school. Of the 133 evening students, 48.1% graduated from day middle school.

3. Of the 133 evening students 57.8% are employed during the day.
4. 30.1% of the day students came from families with incomes ranging from 30,000-50,000 Won per month while 39.1% of the evening students came from families with incomes under 30,000 Won per month.
5. There was no difference in height between day and evening students who were eighteen years of age but in the seventeen age group the day students were taller.
6. Among the eighteen year old students, the evening students were heavier than the day students.
7. The day students had larger chest measurements.
8. Of the total respondents 11% of those without glasses had defective vision.
9. Day students were able to take supper before 8 P.M but the evening students could not take supper until after 10:30 P.M when classes finished.
10. 97.4% of day students knew of the services of the school nurse but only 51.8% of the evening students knew of her services. Services of school nurse were utilized by 74.8% of the day students and 21.3% of evening students.
From a health point of view, the time of the evening meal and the utilization of the nurses services should receive attention by authorities. A break of some time(least fifteen minutes) during the evening classes would allow students time for a meal.
Readjustment of the nurses schedule and reconsideration of her responsibilities could make her services more effective to both day and evening students.
